At The 1874 Guest House, mother-daughter design team Alayna Louise Interiors has thoughtfully reawakened this historic coastal estate in Galveston, TX with colorful flair and characterful trimmings. Drawing from the spirit of New Orleans and Charleston, discover the trimming details that played a role in restoring this house to its former glory, inviting others to experience it anew.
“When working within a historic home like The 1874, I think about trimming as something that should feel as though it has always been there. It is less about adding decoration and more about continuing the language of the house. Historically, these details served a purpose, whether softening edges or adding a sense of refinement, so I try to honor that intention.”

A sea of deep blue welcomes guests into the men's parlour, where two tapestry-upholstered armchairs are finished with Inca Cord seams and a tailored Aztec Border skirt in Vermillion.
In another curated corner, a plaid settee features a collection of throw pillows framed by the Paddington Wool Brush Fringe in Angora, Inca Brush Fringe in Vermillion, and Metallic Brush Fringe in Antique Gold.
Past the campaign chests and gilded frames is the entrance to a bright and airy dining room.
Welcoming guests at the entry, a pair of chintz armchairs are skirted by the Margaux Bullion Fringe in Hydrengia Antique, which pulls together the room's sophisticated palette.
"Trimming is something I consider early in the process, not as a final layer. Once I begin building a palette, I think about where a room might need softness, where it might need structure, and where a small detail could create a sense of continuity. I see it almost as a quiet connector between pieces. In some rooms it reinforces the more traditional elements of the home, while in others it introduces a lighter, more playful note."
A glimpse into the Carriage House guest room, a sitting area's table skirt is joyfully adorned with the Calisto Triple Bead Fringe in Coral, playing on the bedroom's flamingo pinks. Seated on either side, floral accent chairs are elegantly finished with the Veronique Cord in Leaf, echoing the verdant accents throughout.
Another guest room features an admiral blue loveseat, contrasted by Veranda Linen Cord seams in Jonquille and a Mireille Embroidered Border skirt in Leaf.
