Walls have long been a canvas for ornamentation, which has rarely included passementerie, outlining an upholstered panel or tracing the edge of an architectural detail. But what if trim took on a larger role? Explore five rooms where we brought trim center stage, with inspiring applications that not only enhance existing features but take on a decorative life of their own.
The time-honored gallery wall receives an unexpected update. Four fantastical passementerie frames infuse movement and unique flair into a curated collection of artwork. The Dorset Velvet Scallop creates a striking silhouette, grounding the delicate painting with its rich Coral hue. The Aristotle Greek Key in Golden Strie, Veranda Linen Crete in Waterlily, and Palais Scalloped Tassel Fringe in Jardin highlight the artwork’s palette in three distinct ways, creating a harmonious yet varied dialogue between trim and art.
The Antoinette Embroidered Border in Sapphire underscores the pink picture rail above, accompanied by the French Grosgrain Border in Ruby and Palais Scalloped Tassel Fringe, mirroring the frame below.
The room’s resplendent ocher sofa is accented by a lengthy lumbar pillow, embellished with two rows of Annecy Brush Fringe in Gold and a delicate line of Margaux Rosettes in Mandarine in between.
Where flowers bloom, fringe follows. The Oceanside Tassel Fringe in Capri climbs across classic wall moldings, a jolt of electric teal that echoes the upholstery below. Between the tassels, a painted portrait is framed with a dimensional duo, the Aria Silk Brush Fringe in Blush and Bagatelle Velvet Border in Dewdrop by Timothy Corrigan, mirroring the artwork’s petal pinks and muted greens.
The Bagatelle Tassel Skirt Fringe in Petal skirts the sofa, creating vivid contrast and drawing out the coral wallpaper’s soft pinks. Within reach, the Aurelia Ombré Border elevates two tall lampshades in perfectly paired colorways Honey and Shell. Crowning the space, the Saisons Stripe Border in Polo adds a final striped flourish above the picture molding.
Doubling down on fringe, we continued to experiment with chair rail trim, layering the Elementi Tiered Fringe in Carciofo with the coordinating Elementi Ombré Border, both by Maddux Creative, for a more dramatic alternative to the Oceanside Tassel Fringe.
Graphic and tailored, the Dorset Velvet Scallop in Porcelain, Flórián Velvet Border in Imperial, and Aristotle Greek Key in Fern frame a double doorway, set between crisp chalk-white moldings. Along the chair rail, French Grosgrain Ribbon in Prussian is layered over the Tarantella Pleated Border in Mediterranean to create a bold, dimensional blue stripe.
Geometric details that transform... The Alessia Velvet Border in Ebony adds contrasting pattern to four wide-striped panels, while the Corrales Appliqué Border in Piñon zigzags along the top and bottom of this antique dresser. The Aristotle Greek Key in Classic White and Black traces along the wall behind, continuing this rhythmic movement into the rest of the room. A final flourish, the Margaux Key Tassel in Mandarine hangs from the brass knob, adding to its warmth and luster.
Leaning into green, the dimensional Maxim Velvet Border in Emerald and Bagatelle Velvet Border in Fern by Timothy Corrigan offer a contemporary twist on traditional frame molding. The Elora Embroidered Border in Green Tea completes the look, bringing a simple lampshade into the verdant scheme.
