Sumptuous Seating

Maximalism has found its muse in the sofa, a design movement that has captured the attention of publications around the world, from the New York Times to Livingetc. Think brush fringed seams, showstopping skirts, and a joyful abundance of pillows. Explore five takes on seating that celebrate the magnificence of more.

A FOOLPROOF SKIRT FRINGE

"It began as a practical way to finish the raw edges of upholstery before modern hemming techniques existed," explains Marisa Gutmacher for Livingetc. Since then, skirt fringe has evolved into a spectrum of expressive finishes, from sleek chainette fringe to elaborate, layered tassels and everything in between.

While a chainette finish like the Barcelona Ombré Fringe is a beautiful way to bring maximalism into a contemporary space, tasseled skirt fringe instantly refines an edge with a nod to tradition and touch of drama. The Rouen Tassel Fringe and Édelie Linen Tassel Skirt Fringe are two elegant, tonal options, while the Bagatelle Tassel Skirt Fringe by Timothy Corrigan takes ornament to the next level with a colorblocked rotation of tassels. For those looking to pair a classic silhouette with a natural, relaxed texture, the Bali Jute Tassel Skirt Fringe is a timeless favorite.

FRINGING AT THE SEAMS

Brush fringe has become a compelling alternative to the classic cord finish, offering a flourish that can completely transform a simple seat. “Fringing is adding dimension and a touch of the unexpected to contemporary projects,” says Marisa Gutmacher for Livingetc. “It taps into a desire for tactility, luxury, and craftsmanship, and designers are using fringed sofas to give spaces a sculptural presence.”

Multi-tonal finishes like the Trianon Blocked Brush Fringe and MDS Check Brush Fringe by Mark D. Sikes can be transformational to a seating's aesthetic, while designer go-tos like the Aria Silk Brush Fringe and Aurelia Brush Fringe can provide a seamless addition of dimension. Take a cue from Meg Lonergan and design your own brush fringe with Semi Custom, which she used to not only curate color but craft with a Performance yarn for outdoor application in this striking loggia.

BANDING & APPLIQUÉ

Subtle, yet still impactful, these additions offer rich embellishment without altering the silhouette. Whether framing a cushion or adding intrigue to plain corners, these tailored trimmings introduce crisp, refined layering for the subtler maximalist.

Banding, even with the simplest border, instantly elevates a cushion with structure and contrast. A coordinating appliqué takes this adornment one step further, or stands beautifully on its own. Grace Frederick demonstrates this application beautifully on the corners of simple sofa skirts with the Donato Appliqué in Avorio.
